Lately, it seems the South Island is getting all the attention. I get it, who doesn’t love those views ? But skipping the North Island all together is a mistake! Hobbits, hiking, glow worms and wine are just some of the amazing things to be found within a few hours drive of Auckland. Here are 5 must-see places on New Zealand’s North Island:

Waiheke Island

Only a 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland, this island boasts the feel of tropical Hawaii mixed with the wine lovers dream of Napa valley.

Check out more about Waiheke here.

For any fan of Lord of the Rings, this is a must see! (I admit, I geeked out hard.) Even if you aren’t a fan, the rolling landscape of the New Zealand countryside is a peaceful haven.

I took a day tour with Beach and Bush Tour Company and loved it! Find out more information here.

( This isn't a sponsored post, I just genuinely loved the tour!)

Coromandel Peninsula

Hot spring beaches, rainforest hikes and impressive rock formations make this a worthy day trip or overnight stay.

Steeped in Maori culture and brimming with sulfur filled smoke of volcanic hot springs, the draw of this small community is clear. The living Maori village can be a little touristy, but still interesting if you want to learn more about the culture.

The biggest city in New Zealand somehow feels homey and elegant at the same time. Cute coffee shops, a yacht-lined harbour and seaside vibe make this city the perfect home base for exploring the North Island.
